I'm going to miss Southwest Nursery's Christmas tree lot at 41st Street and Harvard Avenue. I'm going to miss it for selfish reasons.
I live not far from the lot. Actually I have been buying a tree from there for about 30 years. Right before my son was born my then-wife and I moved into a house nearby. So, for the last 22 years I have been buying my tree there. When my son was old enough, around 2 or so, it became a Christmas tradition.
A few years ago – maybe it was 10 or 15 and just seems like a few – I finally broke down and bought one of those really good tree stands that they sell there. It was one of the best purchases I have ever made. It is a sturdy stand and the hole in the bottom of the tree fits perfectly in it.
I spent more years than I care to remember going through different tree stands. I used mostly the kinds with those big screws that are hard to turn. No matter how hard I tried, I rarely got the tree straight. And more often than not the stand would be too small and the tree would tip over. Those lousy, cheap stands could really crimp my Yuletide cheer.
The stand from Southwest Nursery fixed all that.
My son and I made our annual trek to 41st and Harvard Sunday. We found a really nice tree. The young people there were as friendly as usual as are all the people involved. Again this year both my son and I bumped into someone we knew.
Next year Southwest Nursery is moving its Christmas tree operation to 81st and Mingo. It won't be same without them.
But, I suppose I'll have to drag myself all the way to 81st and Mingo. That is, if my son wants to carry on the tradition. He might be making traditions of his own by then.
I have a really good tree stand he can use.
