Rarely have I heard less enthusiasm for a summer blockbuster than for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the fourth film in a series whose first three pictures grossed $2.7 billion worldwide. Yes, billions.
The happy report: While "On Stranger Tides" is a bloated, convoluted mess story-wise, it's a lot of fun.
With more of a concentration on Jack Sparrow (Depp loves this role, and it shows) than on subplots, and with a concentration on stunts and swordplay rather than CGI water and serpent effects, it's much better than the third film.
That would be "At World's End," which I think caused most of the blahs people have toward a new film in the series. Put that film out of your mind and go yo-ho-ho and a tub of popcorn for the new "Pirates."
Check out the trailer for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," which features a 45-second introduction by Jack Sparrow.
