Opening of new Sam's Club is an event in itself

The new Sam's Club opens Thursday in the Tulsa Hills shopping center at 71st Street and U.S. 75.

OK, so the opening of a new Sam's is a stretch for what qualifies as an event.

But in Tulsa, we roll out big time for grand openings and new stores. So when the new 130,000-square-foot Sam's Club opens at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, you can expect a crowd.

You know how many samples are handed out at Sam's on a normal day, so just imagine the samples at the grand opening. Go during lunchtime, and you'll taste enough food to call it lunch.

Sam's is, of course, open to members only. So if you're interested, you can sign up on the spot as you walk in the store.

Here's some of what you'll find, besides totally stocked shelves, at Sam's today:

  • 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Appearance by professional angler Scott Suggs

  • 1 to 3 p.m.: Appearance by Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett

  • "The Cheese Lady," Sarah Kaufmann will carve the Golden Driller, Buffalo Horse, OU's Boomer and Sooner and more with a 500-pound wheel of Wisconsin cheddar. She'll be carving from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

  • Appearances by Tony the Tiger, the Nesquick Bunny and other characters

  • Loads of product samples and giveaways

What: Opening of the new Sam's Club
When: 8:30 a.m. Thursday
Where: Tulsa Hills, 71st Street and U.S. 75
