I was talking to Angie Johnson, owner of Eats 2U catering, yesterday while researching a story about Jazzwich, a new lunch program at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. (Review to run next Thursday.)

Johnson is catering the Wednesday-only event with box lunches, and I was asking her what sort of items she would be putting in the boxes each week. One item she said that occasionally will be included is the egg salad from the Orbach's deli, when the high-end department store had a location on the third level in the Williams Center Forum.

"I worked there in the '80s; it was my first food job," Johnson recalled. "The egg salad was unbelievable. It had almonds and black olives and was just fabulous. The only difference in mine is I serve it on marble rye."

Boy, when Johnson mentioned the Williams Center Forum, the downtown mall that was established in 1978 and ran until 1994 (Orbach's was gone before the '90s), it brought back some great memories.

Like the Magic Pan, my favorite place to take a date. And the skating rink and The Cinema, the movie theater that served beer. And all of the retail shops, from Athlete's Foot and Peck & Peck to The Limited and Radio Shack.

I don't know if downtown ever can recapture that kind of retail presence again, but wouldn't it be wonderful?
