Oscar blog part 2

More from the Oscars:
8:18 p.m.: With an award presentation schedule based on how a film is put together, from the ground up, an interesting concept looks a little stilted in the presentation (Sara Jessica Parker and Daniel Craig don't quite look rehearsed on the sets flying toward them and where their cue on the stage is to be). But as the pair swiftly hands out art direction, costuming and makeup awards, maybe this strategy will pay off in a shorter show. Stay tuned.

9:10 p.m.: Heath Ledger wins the best supporting actor trophy for "The Dark Knight," to no one's surprise. Then his father, mother and sister accept the award, and their class and graciousness seal the moment. The world lost a wonderful young talent; these people lost a part of themselves. A moment of reality in Hollywood.

9:16 p.m.: Thank you, Philippe Petit, the "Man on Wire" of the Oscar-winning documentary, for joining Jackman in the showmanship category. Making a coin disappear and balancing an Oscar on his chin, he reminds that an acceptance speech can be magic.

9:25 p.m.: After yet another multi-clip fest of action-film images (this one to illustrate the sound and visual effects category), the Oscars are looking somewhat like a vehicle to display movie trailers. This is clearly one of the trendy changes producers have inserted into the show, so, do people like seeing clips of "The Dark Knight" and "Iron Man" for the third time in the show? Or did they commit these images to memory long ago?

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
