Out of power, out of patience

On Wednesday, I wrote an article about what to keep and what to discard from your refrigerator after a power outage. A chart explained what was safe at room temperature, what needed to be put in a cooler, etc.

I didn’t follow my own advice. Once I started cleaning out my dark refrigerator, I couldn’t stop. For one, I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of finding a place to store some things. But more than that, cleaning out that refrigerator of all of those strange condiments that I haven’t used in forever was cathartic.

I filled at least four big trash bags with jars of pickles, melted ice cream, a bag of shrimp I found in the back of the freezer. I was done with it.

When the power comes back on – oh please let it be soon – I will have a completely fresh start, and empty shelves to fill with more pickles and mustard.

Hope you didn't throw out your shortcake. It's good forever.

Ha! I did the same thing, and then when it was empty I couldn't resist pulling all the shelves and drawers out, cleaning them with hot soapy water and windexing them before I stuck them back in. A 10-minute job ended up taking two hours, but my fridge is sparkly clean for the little bit of food that's left in it!
