Overheard at the Guggenheim

During our New York sojourn, my wife and I spent a few hours in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art, which opened to the public 50 years ago this month. The museum -- with its distinctive spiral -- was one of the last projects architect Frank Lloyd Wright completed before his death, and the museum is hosting an exhibit on Wright's work.

Two women were standing in front of architectural drawings of Wright's design for the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Wauwatosa, Wisc.

"You know," one woman said, "this isn't original. I've seen the original -- it's in Arizona. The Gammage Auditorium. Frank Lloyd Wright ripped off that building."

(Actually, Wright designed the Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz. If anything, the Gammage design influenced Wright protege William Wesley Peters in his design of the Bartlesville Community Center, but we digress).

The two women continued to stare at the designs for the Annunciation church for a few moments, before the first lady said, "It looks like some kind of spaceship."

Her companion hummed in agreement. "A spaceship. Yes. Or a gazebo."

Very beautiful. I go for spaceship. Sure it isn't ORU? HA!
