Philbrook wins grant to fund Second Saturday program

One of the most popular program at the Philbrook Museum of Art is the recipient of a three-year, $142,232 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The grant will help fund the museum's Second Saturday program, which offers free admission and special activities for families on the second Saturday of each month -- which, for the month of August, is this Saturday.

The museum will offer free admission from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and provide opportunities for all ages to create art, take tours of the museum or join in special scavenger hunts.

(It's not part of the free activities, but this Saturday evening is also the final opportunity to see American Theatre Company's production of "The Comedy of Errors" on the Philbrook lawn. Show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $20.)

The Second Saturday started in 2008, and now regularly attracts close to 2,000 visitors to the museum each month.

Philbrook was one of 152 organizations to receive this annual grant, out of 470 applicants.

In presenting the grant to Philbrook, the ILMS praised the program’s broad-based community participation and sound financial management.

This is the second major gift in support of the Second Saturday program the museum has received this year. ONEOK pledged $200,000 to be the presenting sponsor of the event earlier this year.
