Pick a pumpkin patch for a fall family outing

It's pumpkin patch time.

It used to be that a pumpkin patch was nothing more than a field, sometimes a church parking lot, filled with pumpkins and gourds. Now a pumpkin patch is a destination.

Last year, I hauled my family of five to nearly every pumpkin patch in town. We went to Owasso, Jenks, Bixby, Sand Springs and Porter. Every weekend, we picked a new patch for roaming through mountains of gourds, taking a hay ride and drinking cider. That many pumpkin patches can get expensive, so we let the kids pick a tiny pumpkin at each stop.

It's hard to choose my favorite pumpkin patch – it's a toss up between Carmichael's in Bixby and Pleasant Valley Farms in Sand Springs. Livesay, in Porter, is a trek for those who live in the heart of Tulsa, but it's great fun if you're interested in a day trip.

The day we visited Livesay, a woman who worked at the orchard had made homemade cinnamon rolls filled with peach preserves from the summer crop. We bought a couple and used a hay bale as a table for an unforgettable afternoon snack.

Here's our list of pumpkin patches in and around Tulsa. It's early in the season, so we'll update this list as we find out about more patches. If you know of others, leave a comment or let me know at natalie.mikles@tulsaworld.com.
