Pixies enchant sold-out Brady Theater crowd

Last night's show was the first time the band played the Sooner state in its 25-plus-year career, bassist Kim Deal said during Saturday night’s concert.

The Pixies rocketed through their set of more than two dozen fuzzed-out and intense pop-punk classics, including the entire “Doolittle” album plus b-sides and other hits.

Kim Deal was wayward and sharp in her vocals as Frank Blacks was caustic. Melodies danced and collided in trademark Pixies bombast, in lockstep with perhaps one of the most consistently exuberant (and longest-standing) sold-out crowds in Brady Theater history.

Oversized Chinese paper lantern-like lighting and stark spotlights contrasted high tech and high-definition LED screen displaying Salvador Dali scenes to rolling eyeballs and revolvers.

“Here Comes Your Man” with a quintet of screen shots projected behind the band -- of each member mugging to the beat as the live crowd sang along with Deal’s "so-long, so-long."

Halfway through the set, Deal even yelled out "Side two!" before launching into “Mr. Grieves.” I owned the original album on cassette. I’m guessing most of the crowd did, too. Drummer David Lovering sang to “La La Love You” as animated hearts and arrows chased each other and fans whistled along.

Joey Santiago’s Western-tinged surf-guitar twanged along as parched desert video speeding by -- Deal’s and Black’s high harmony was the high noon sun.

Tunes included “Dancing the Manta Ray,” “Weird at My School,” “Debaser,” “Monkey Gone to Heaven” “Crackity Jones,” “Where is My Mind” and a double encore that included “Gigantic.”

The band earned its five-plus minute standing ovation after the set’s finale, “Gouge Away.” Seat pounding and screaming. Nobody sat down. The arena synched in hand claps and foot stomps.

“Since we’ve never played Oklahoma before” was Deal’s introduction into the second encore.

One of the best shows I've ever seen. I didn't sit down once. I lucked out on the presale and got seats on the 5th row. It was prefect.

Great show! I have lived in Tulsa my whole life and this was the first visit to historic Brady Theater.

So wish I could have gone.

A darn good show. Very scripted though, not much seemed unplanned. I wish Black Francis wouldn't mumble during some of the singing parts. Kim Deal has a voice like an angel.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
