The ever-industrious Alexander McCall Smith -- he of "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" among dozens of other books -- is once again writing a novel in installments for a newspaper.
McCall Smith's "Scotland Street" books were written in installments for the Scotsman paper. But his latest effort ups the ante a bit.
The new serial, which began on Sunday, is titled "Courduroy Mansions," and is an online exclusive on the website of the Telegraph, one of the major London dailies.
McCall Smith is producing a chapter a day, and plans to incorporate suggestions from readers on how the plot and characters should develop over the course of the story.
A story, we hasten to add, that will take 20 weeks to complete.
For those who would rather listen than read, the website also has podcasts of each chapter, read by Andrew Sachs (best known to American audiences as the waiter Manuel on the classic TV comedy "Fawlty Towers").
It's all available at:

McCall Smith's stories are gentle, often humorous, remarkably warm-hearted tales -- a necessary tonic (in my opinion, at least) from the dark fiction and depressing realities that more commonly confront us.
Enjoy.
