Pray, tell

I just saw today’s CNN poll, which asked, “Do you think praying for rain will work?” After casting my vote, the results popped up: “Yes: 43 percent; no: 57 percent.”
Being a Christian – far, far, FAAAAR from an ideal one, but a Christian, nonetheless – I cast my “si, senorita” vote. Some may say it’s wishful, perhaps even simple thinking. But considering how many times I’ve had nowhere to turn but prayer, I felt compelled to say yea.
Not trying to be funny here, just go with me for a minute. I’ve prayed for some considerably stupid things in my life and, surprise, I got them. These “considerably stupid things” I speak of have ranged from toys at Christmas (when I was probably old enough to know better than to sweet-talk Heaven) to relationships – specifically, that whole “Please send me somebody to love.” And a pony. Just kidding – I’m not stable enough. Ha! Sorry, let’s move on …
I’ve also been told “no” post-prayer, whether the request was silly, relatively speaking, or of a quite serious nature – like a loved one’s failing health or missing kids in another state I’ve never even visited, things like that. And then you get the phone call that the loved one you’ve been praying for passed away, and the TV news anchor says those kids that were missing were found dead – or never found at all. And then that starts the whole spiritual debate about why God does what he does, blah, blah, blah.
Still, back to that silly CNN poll (which I take daily like some kinda vitamin). And let me be somewhere close to the first to point out that this is all very Pollyanna of me. But, rose-colored glasses aside, my “yes” opinion to today’s question is quite sincere. After all, if I lacked faith or hope, all I’d have is a string of useless exes and, perhaps, a saddle for that pony I never got.
All this to say, albeit poorly, I hope some of y’all are voting “yes” when it comes to praying for things we need, be it rain in Georgia or common sense in Tulsa or – well, God only knows. Roll your eyes if you want, but what would it hurt? OK, I’ll shut up now. Gotta pray for relief from writer’s block.
Peace, love and prayer … xoxo

Amen, Jas! Thanks so much for this. Your mix of humor and prayer is perfect. As for me, I'm currently praying for a healthy child to be born in June, my husband's medical tests to turn out fine and for my boss to let me work from home. My prayers have sure changed a lot from when I was a teenager praying for a boyfriend.

Living Wright
While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
