Preview of a review: "Rent" by Tulsa Project Theatre

Tulsa Project Theatre, which is working to become the city's first Equity theater company, opened its production of "Rent" Thursday night at the Hard Rock Casino in Catoosa. The production is a collaborative effort with the University of Tulsa's Department of Theatre and Musical Theatre, and features student performers and professional actors sharing the stage in this staging of Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical.
The full review will appear in Saturday's Tulsa World. For those thinking about attending tonight's performance, consider the following:
Last October, Tulsa Project Theatre brought “The Rocky Horror Show” to life as a way to get people’s attention. The company’s second production, of Jonathan Larson’s musical “Rent,” is a statement of purpose.
Simply put, Tulsa Project Theatre wants to prove that Tulsa has the local resources to produce theater that - in artistic quality, technical sophistication and entertainment value -- is equal or superior to any of the Broadway touring shows that regularly pass through town, or even the productions one might find during a trip to the Great White Way.
“Rent,” which opened Thursday at the Hard Rock Casino’s The Joint for a three-performance run, is thrilling proof that Tulsa Project Theatre’s dream of a truly professional theater company in Tulsa is no idle fantasy.
Although it has been about 525,600 times 11 minutes since I last saw a professional production of “Rent,” I still have very vivid memories of that performance. And what I saw Thursday night was at least as good – and in some ways, much better – than what I saw back in 2000.
Tickets are $35-$55 and can be reserved by calling 918-384-7625, or online at

Doors open at 7 p.m., show is at 8 p.m.
