Watching Theatre Tulsa’s production of “Waiting for Lefty” makes on realize that not much has changed in the last 70 years or so.
Clifford Odets wrote this one-act play in 1935, when this country was in the depths of the Great Depression. But the only thing that makes this play seem dated is some of the language — slang that at one time might have sounded tough and smart and street-wise but that today has a decidedly quaint ring to it.
Otherwise, the situations portrayed in “Waiting for Lefty” are strongly — almost uncomfortably — contemporary. And Theatre Tulsa’s production, directed by Michael Wright, makes this piece of agitprop theater a surprisingly stirring show.
“Waiting for Lefty” continues with performances at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19-21 at the Tulsa PAC. For tickets, call 918-596-7111 or go to
