Queen of Rockabilly releases early works in digital format

Rockabilly singer Wanda Jackson
As chronicled in her allmusic Web site biography,
Wanda Jackson
was only halfway through high school when, in 1954, country singer
Hank Thompson
heard her on an
Oklahoma City
radio show and asked her to record with his band, the
Brazos Valley Boys
. By the end of the decade, Jackson had become one of America's first major female country and rockabilly singers. In fact, she became known as the Queen of Rockabilly.
Jackson, born in Maud, Okla., first toured in 1955 and 1956, she was placed on a bill with none other than
Elvis Presley
. The two hit it off almost immediately. Jackson said it was Presley, along with her father, who encouraged her to sing rockabilly.
TODAY
, 19 of Jackson's best rockabilly albums were (finally!) released digitally. I found 'em all on
iTunes
.
Here's the list, but one of my favorites is available from her Web site and was released in 2006, "I Remember Elvis: Wanda Jackson." Jackson sings versions of Elvis' early hits.

Barrelhouse Beat
Barrelhouse:
A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.
Beat:
The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.
About me:
I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
