Reader looking for egg rolls equal to those at the old Loi's Golden Dragon

A reader from Nowata recently told me he used to make special trips to Tulsa "just to eat at the old Loi's Golden Dragon at 41st (Street) and Memorial (Drive)."
"We would make the long drive for what we considered the finest Chinese cuisine in the country," the reader said. "There was no doubt that Loi's egg rolls were absolutely the finest egg rolls we have ever eaten.
"They were the real old-school egg rolls that were almost a meal in themselves, stuffed full of shrimp and wonderful Oriental vegetables. They were the highlight of the meal."
The reader said he has been searching for comparable egg rolls for the last decade.
"There was a restaurant in Bartlesville that served the identical, wonderful egg rolls, but The Fortune went out of business many years ago also," he said. "Now it seems like the restaurants all serve cheap imitations of the real egg rolls. What has happened? Is there any place one can go to the REAL egg rolls."
That's a good question. I don't recall exactly what the Loi's egg rolls were like. I do like the egg rolls at Be Le Vegetarian, but it is going out of business June 30.
Any suggestions out there?

I make my own. After the Vietnamese came here and opened restaurants, I started adding a small amount of peanut butter to mine. Their egg rolls had a slight peanut flavor that I loved and adding the peanut butter did it. I loved the Fortune in Bartlesvill too. I haven't found a good egg roll here, but the reader might try some Vietnamese places.

I also used to be a regular to Loi's Golden Dragon...and MISS everything that it served. My friend and I have searched in vain to find a suitable replacement for this superb Chinese Buffet. Everything was always fresh, having all of the great chinese dishes...Egg Fu Young, LoMaine, spicy chicken and beef dishes...excellence in everything.
Over the years we have tried literally dozens of "new" Chinese buffets...and never went back to a single one. Crab legs, and Shrimp does not a GREAT Chinese Buffet make. Great, fresh Chinese dishes makes a GREAT CHinese Buffet.
If anyone knows of any...let me know. I do stop in at the Ocean China across from the hospital in B'ville....very good, but limited number of dishes.

I used to live in Bartlesville and remember going to the fortune restaurant...I believe the same family came to tulsa and opened the fortune chef on yale at about 32nd or so just north of Saids...it's carry out only-but those eggrolls taste the same...egg foo yound is outstanding with cashew chicken

Fortune Chef take out has been in that place since the early 70's, I doubt it is the same family. I like Chopstix at 61st and Sheridan for basic Chinese Food, but I don't remember the egg rolls standing out. Have you tried the Golden Gate at 26th and Harvard? Scott reviewed it as 3 stars and it has been there a long time. I haven't been, but it is on my hit list. Again, I would try a Vietnamise place for those peanuty egg rolls.
