Reader recalls sweet potato pies on Greenwood 30 years ago

I received a message a while back from Pat Flanagan, who was a reporter with the Oklahoma Eagle in the 1970s.

"At that time and in that area (Greenwood District) there was a woman who made marvelous individually sized sweet potato pies," Flanagan wrote. "I can't remember now whether she had a restaurant or just sold the pies on the street. Does this ring any bells?

"Last week I had lunch with friends at Evelyn's and the sweet potato pies came rushing back to me. I asked the waitress there if she knew anything about the maker of the pies. As I was speaking this I realized the waitress wasn't even born in 1970."

I did not ask if Flanagan had spoken to Evelyn's owner, Wanda J, who had restaurants all over north Tulsa beginning in the mid '70s. Maybe someone who was around the Greenwood District at that time could shed some light on this.
