Reader says Murphy's Hot Hamburger best in the state

Today's story about some of the best hamburgers in the state has brought passionate response.

In his book "Hamburger America," author George Motz includes 12 Oklahoma joints he considers great.

Anytime you have such a list, it means someone is left out. Today I've heard from several readers who couldn't believe their favorites (Ron's! Bill's Jumbo! Weber's!) didn't make the cut.

Others were glad to see their favorites. One guy said it was about time Pak-A-Sak in Enid got some attention.

Another man called to say Motz had missed the hands-down best burger in the state: the Hot Hamburger from Murphy's in Bartlesville.

It's legendary for people in Bartlesville and beyond. And last year it grabbed national attention when Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman, posted a recipe for her version of this burger.

As you can see in the photo, it's hard to find the meat under the pile of fries. The Hot Hamburger is a chopped ground beef patty with sauteed onions, a mountain of French fries and topped with dark gravy. "Gravy Over All" is the motto at Murphy's.

Don't think Murphy's "mess" qualifies as a real hamburger as much as a hamburger steak with fries somewhere under the gravy it swims in.

Is that why the Whataburger ads are gone?
