Red-carpet coiffures

If you watched the Oscars, you surely noticed some of the fabulous celebrity hair styles, one of my faves being Taraji Henson, Oscar nominee for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

We have three star looks to share with you from two celebrity stylists, both of home used Aveda products.

First up, New York-based celebrity hair stylist Dante Blandshaw created the stunning red carpet look for Henson. It was a clean, fresh, modern take on a layered, textured bob – asymmetrical with natural movement and shine.

“I wanted to create a modern, asymmetrical, textured bob with natural movement and shine," said Blandshaw, who shared expert tips on how he used Aveda products to achieve the look:
1. “I started with Aveda Brilliant Shampoo and Aveda Brilliant Conditioner to soften Taraji’s textured hair,” he said. The Aveda Brillian line provides smooth shine to textured hair, as well as reduces blow-dry time. (I've used it to when my hair was long -- fabulous product.)
2. Prep hair with Aveda Brilliant Damage Control to protect from heat styling.
3. Blow dry hair straight using a paddle brush.
4. After blow drying, add a dime-sized amount of Aveda Brilliant Universal Styling Creme (my fave Aveda product of all time) to add additional shine without weighing hair down.
5. Flat-iron hair to create the foundation for a smooth, sleek red carpet look.
6. Using 1.5- and 2-inch barrel curling irons, curl hair throughout to give bend and movement, accenting the layers in the cut.
7. Slightly curl the front to create a soft, side-swept bang for added height and fullness.
8. Comb hair through with a wide-tooth comb.
9. Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for a light finish.

Frieda Pinto and Dev Patel, stars of Best Picture winner “Slumdog Millionaire,” looked stunning thanks to celebrity editorial hair stylist Jeffrey Paul. He created a fresh and elegant look for Frieda Pinto, whose hair he divided into three parts and twisted back into an architectural, couture flower shape on the right side of the head.

Here's how to get Pinto's look:
1. Start with Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Shampoo and Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Clay Conditioner.
2. Mix a cocktail of Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam and Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip. Work the product into wet hair to add texture and volume. "When creating an updo, it’s important to use products that give thickness and body," Paul said.
3. Blow dry hair back to add lift and height at the roots.
4. Create a left side part, and divide hair into three sections: three quarters of hair in one section on the right and the remaining hair into two smaller sections.
5. Pull the right section of hair back into a low ponytail just behind the right ear above the nape of the neck.
6. Twist the ponytail, working Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip into hair. Wrap the ponytail around the base, creating a flower shape. Secure in place with pins.
7. Work Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip into each of the remaining sections, and twist back and around the flower shape, creating a layered, rose-like effect.
8. Finish the look with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.
9. Lastly, shake the head a bit to loosen up the look and provide a sense of natural movement.

And here's how to get Dev Patel's 'do, for which Paul used the Aveda Men Pure-Formance hair care line to create a simple yet architectural look with natural movement for Patel.
1. Begin by washing hair with Aveda Men Pure-Formance Shampoo and Aveda Men Pure-Formance Conditioner.
2. Work Aveda Pure-Formance Grooming Clay into hair with both hands to add shape and texture, pulling the front of hair up and bringing the sides forward.
3. "Dev loves Aveda Pure-Formance Grooming Clay because it gives texture and hold without heavy shine," Paul said. "Dev’s hair already has a lot of shine to it, so I wanted something lightweight and matte yet strong enough to add shape and let me really play with movement."
4. Finish with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray to hold the look.

While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch."
