Relapses, "Dracula" and blueberry confusion -- Week 3, Day 1

The queen and I share the same quandary regarding bananas, as you can see here.

I think I might actually be getting serious about this whole lifestyle-change thing.

Not that I haven't at least THOUGHT I was being serious this whole time, but my occasional (i.e., near daily) relapses concerning food the first week and a half were disconcerting. No, wait, depressing -- hence the doc visit.

But this weekend, as I sit up here at work on Sunday afternoon (hi, boss), it just dawned on me, Delta, that I've done very well this weekend. It was probably a bad idea to stay in bed as late as I did on Saturday (whatever, loved it, read the news, a little "Dracula: The Undead").

But I eventually rose and shone, then scrambled egg whites with chicken and fat-free cheese, plus an orange; for a snack later, had a green bell pepper; then ate Chinese with Youngun and his mom, and picked a healthy(ish) plate -- and that's it. No late-night snacking, woohoo! (The five Ritz crackers I had at 9 p.m. don't count, right?)

Today, I had oatmeal with a banana and almonds before doing laundry (HUGE accomplisment on my part, thank you), then did some crock-potting and clothes-folding before having a chicken breast and coming to work -- in gym clothes, thanks again, because I'm meeting PB for some spin time (never done it, more on that later).

But back to the oatmeal. I have folks telling me that sounds pretty healthy, especially with the blueberries or bananas, plus almonds; others say I should have scrambled egg whites instead because the oats and fruits are nothing but carbs; and a few have advised me to eat both, especially if I'm getting back to working out in the morning. So what the freak am I supposed to eat? I'm going bananas, pardon the pun. I can't afford a nutritionist, so any suggestions from a health nut out there would be MUCH appreciated.

OK, gotta write a story so I can go exercise and embarrass myself (Tuesday column, perhaps)?

Peace, love and oatmeal-fueled deadlines ... xoxo

Living Wright

While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
