"Rent" is due

The announcement that the rock musical “Rent” is returning to Tulsa’s Performing Arts Center next March makes me want to proclaim “La vie boheme!”

What a fantastical musical. What a disappointing movie.

When the late Jonathan Larson’s tale of a group of friends finding their voices and living with AIDS in 1990s New York came to Tulsa in 2000, it still had that award-winning glow, not only the Tony for best musical but a rare Pulitzer Prize as well.

Now “Rent” returns having to live down one of the more painful-to-watch cinematic experiences of recent years.

Those wonderfully made-for-a-big-house, overwrought songs (Roger: “No one’s perfect, I’ve got baggage…”/Mimi: “…I’m looking for baggage that goes with mine…”) were not created with director Christopher Columbus’ down-your-throat camera close-ups in mind.

Trust me, this show looks dynamite on the Chapman Music Hall stage.

Don’t “Rent,” as in the DVD. Buy, as in tickets for the touring production, which are now on sale.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
