Rhema lights display (with 2 million lights) begins Wednesday

Lights in the bridge are synchronized with Christmas music.

Even if checking out Christmas lights from a helicopter or limo is more your style, you have to drive through the lights display at Rhema at least once in your life.

The annual display, this year with more than 2 million lights, begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

It's one of the biggest displays in the state, and more than 200,000 people are expected to see it this year.

Last year, I couldn't wait to take my girls to see the lights. We made the trip to Broken Arrow, had an early dinner and then waited. And waited. And waited. I'm not sure what I was thinking, but I expected the lights would be on all day –light or dark, rain or shine.

The rain or shine part was right, but no, the lights come on at dark, or at 5:30 each night. So we drove around the Rhema campus waiting for 5:30. I was in the driver's seat, and the longer we drove, the more snoring I heard. By the time the lights switched on, my three babies and husband were all fast asleep in the car.

Even for solo viewing, the lights are amazing. My favorite display is the bridge, where the lights are synchronized to Christmas music.

Showing up extra early isn't a bad idea for Wednesday, opening night. On this night, and every other, through Jan. 1, you can see the lights either by driving around the campus in your car or by parking and walking through the displays. On Nov. 24 to 26 and Dec. 2 and 3, 9 and 10 and 16 to 25, you can watch from a horse-drawn carriage. Carriage rides are $10 for adults and $5 for kids.
