Road food on Route 66

We just spent eight days in Albuquerque, N.M., for a daughter's wedding and made the long haul down I-40 -- in parts on old Route 66 when we exited the interstate -- and had a couple of good diner stops on this trip.

I'm sure results can be wildly uneven at any of these types of restaurants, but we had good food and friendly service at both Jerry's in Weatherford and Route 66 Restaurant in Santa Rosa, N.M.

I never had been to Jerry's previously. It's one of the few 24-hour restaurants left and gets a good deal of late-night business from Southwestern State students. The menu is long, varied and all-American. The honey fried chicken dinner was fabulous. It included a leg, thigh, wing and breast with two sides for something like $8.99.

Jerry's is 45 years old and shows some age in some of the design, such as a couple of rock wall features and brick-colored tile floor. But the stools and booths have been refurbished, and it seemed clean throughout. It isn't a particularly large restaurant, but Christmas stockings were hung behind the counter for 19 employees.

In 20 years of traveling to Albuquerque, it seems we often need a fuel stop at Santa Rosa and have been to Route 66 Restaurant on several occasions. It is full of photos of classic cars and features a menu of both American and Mexican dishes.

The green chili cheeseburger is the signature dish, but you could say that about most diners in New Mexico; it's like chicken-fried steak in Oklahoma.

I'm sure many other good diners can be found between Oklahoma City and Albuquerque. I'm sure we will be making many more trips that way, so if you are aware of others let me know.
