American Red Cross blood donors rock.
May 22-July 31, the nonprofit is promoting its "
Rock and Roll Up Your Sleeves" drive to donate blood or platelets.
Donating blood can help save up to three lives per donation, because blood is separated into its components -- red cells, plasma and platelets -– to treat patients with different needs, according to the Red Cross.
Donating platelets primarily benefits cancer patients. When a patient is undergoing chemotherapy, the production of blood cells is affected and the platelet count may drop to a critical level.
Donors are eligible to win a
Gibson guitar, courtesy of
The Gibson Foundation. The Red Cross also will award multiple guitars and 50,000
guitar picks at donor centers, co-branded with the Gibson and Red Cross logos. Plus, donors receive a free rock and roll themed
t-shirt.
PLUS! As a special incentive for young donors, anyone aged 16-21 can enter to win a $5,000 scholarship. Visit
HERE for contest rules.
To schedule an appointment call 1-800-Red Cross (1-800-733-2767) or visit
