American Red Cross blood donors rock.

May 22-July 31, the nonprofit is promoting its "Rock and Roll Up Your Sleeves" drive to donate blood or platelets.

Donating blood can help save up to three lives per donation, because blood is separated into its components -- red cells, plasma and platelets -– to treat patients with different needs, according to the Red Cross.

Donating platelets primarily benefits cancer patients. When a patient is undergoing chemotherapy, the production of blood cells is affected and the platelet count may drop to a critical level.

Donors are eligible to win a Gibson guitar, courtesy of The Gibson Foundation. The Red Cross also will award multiple guitars and 50,000 guitar picks at donor centers, co-branded with the Gibson and Red Cross logos. Plus, donors receive a free rock and roll themed t-shirt.

PLUS! As a special incentive for young donors, anyone aged 16-21 can enter to win a $5,000 scholarship. Visit HERE for contest rules.

To schedule an appointment call 1-800-Red Cross (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org/make-donation.
