Rubio drinks water to growing chorus of amateur comedians

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., has poked fun of himself for taking a mid-speech swig of water.

Everyone has those moments when a dry throat creates a hacking, embarrassing cough.

Sometimes that disruptive moment is during a play, on the phone or right in the middle of an interview.

Poor U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., has to live down his dry-mouth moment after taking a swig during the middle of his televised response to last night’s State of the Union address.

It’s not a story.

He was thirsty.

He drank.

It may have been awkward, but we’ve all been there.

But that doesn’t stop the online snarky, and sometimes even funny, comments.

Rubio poked fun of it by posting a photo on Twitter of an empty Poland Springs water bottle.

On ABC’s Good Morning America, he said: “I needed water, what am I going to do? God has a funny way of reminding us we're human."

That shows he’s a good sport.

Some of the best responses on Twitter at #staythirsty or #waterbreak or on You Tube are:

“Stay thirsty, Americans - Marco Rubio.” - Anthony De Rosa @AntDeRosa

“I don't always drink water. But when I do, it's in the middle of the biggest moment of my career.” - David Waldman @KagroX

“Hint to Sen. Rubio: crank down the AC before a big speech under the lights. But this is still a very well delivered speech.” – Ari Fleischer @AriFleischer (former White House press secretary)

“Republicans upset with Rubio for diluting talking points.” - Lanre Akinsiku @Lanre_Ak

“If he just took a drink it would be no big deal, but he did it with the sneakiness of a 9 year old stealing a cookie.” - Heromedic18

“Stay thirsty my friend.” - frank ridley

“Good government assures cleaning drinking water.” – John DeVillier

“The gulp heard around the world!” - TwilightRageX

Those tired, dry words he was repeating would make anyone thirst for a drink of cool water.

Those hot, oft repeated words are the ones that lost the last election for his party.

I don't think there is enough water on the planet to make those words palatable.
