SUMMER SIPS: A Southerner in Long Island Tea (a.k.a., "Peaches")

A bushel of my namesake.

On my 21st birthday, I looked forward to ordering a glass of wine and proudly handing my driver's license over when carded.

I didn't get carded because apparently I looked haggard that particular day; but I did order a lovely pinot noir -- and, as soon as I took a sip, loudly compared it to fingernail polish remover.

I've since made my peace with wine (especially pinot noir, my favorite vino), but my best friend ordered me a Long Island to make up for the wine fiasco.

Every now and then, especially in the summer, I'll have a Long Island, a version of which is our next SUMMER SIPS treat this week.

Being a Southerner, I have to admit the drink's name slightly grates my Southern sensibilities. But my buddy Miki at the Cigar Box on Cherry Street makes a lovely Southern version called Peaches. It's named in my honor because that's what Banshee's husband, Mr. Clean, has called me for years. Don't ask.

Here's my version, adapted from DrinksMixer.com.

A Southerner in Long Island Tea (a.k.a., "Peaches")

Serves 1
1 shot vodka
1 shot tequila
1 shot rum
1 shot gin
1 shot triple sec
1 shot sweet and sour mix (some folks add a tad more, but I'm not the biggest sweet and sour fan)
Splash of Diet Coke (hey, gotta watch my weight, right?)

1. Combine the liquors, triple sec, and sweet and sour in a glass filled with ice. Add a splash of Diet Coke so it'll actually resemble tea. (If you wanna be fancy, add a splash of peach tea.)
2. Pour the drink in another glass or cocktail shaker, then back in the first glass, and serve with a straw.

Peace, love and Peaches ... XOXO

While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
