Hopefully, Stillwater Red Dirt music icon Tom Skinner's time isn't running out. He just needs help with his ticker. Sunday's fundraiser hopes to help with mounting medical bills and also start a college education fund for his grandson Flash. Tulsa World file
This weekend, there's really only one place you need to be when it comes to hearing great live, local music.
Plus, it's for a great cause - keeping one music legend alive and helping his grandson save for school.
On Sunday, join a roster of elite Red Dirt musicians as they rally to help one of their own: longtime folk, country, rock and jam musician
Tom Skinner.
"Every musician out there in this community has offered to play this event, so there will be lots of surprises to this line-up. It truly will be a family affair," said Elizabeth Bumgarner, the event media contact.
Performing will be longtime musical cohorts
Mike McClure,
Stoney LaRue,
the Red Dirt Rangers,
Randy Crouch,
Wink Burcham & Friends,
Monica Taylor,
the Science Project,
John Fullbright, the
Dustin Pittsley Band and more.
Skinner is often credited with creating the "Red Dirt" music movement in the 1970s, along with musicians Bob Childers, Greg Jacobs, Jimmy LaFave and others.
Mounting health problems and multiple heart attacks have proven nearly disastrous for Skinner and his family, Bumgarner said.
Also, Skinner hopes to establish a "Flash Fund" to help his grandson Flash get an education. Flash's mother died recently from heart failure and transplant complications.
Showtime is 5 p.m. Sunday at Fassler Hall, 304 S. Elgin Ave. Must be 21. There is a $15 minimum donation at the door. Skinner is a member of the Oklahoma Music Awards Red Dirt Hall of Fame.
