Outside of the closing of two of my favorite Italian spots, Camerelli's Ristorante Italiano and Abruzzi Italian Trattoria, 2007 had been a remarkably stable year for our family owned upscale restaurants.

Then came September, and within days of each other the guillotine fell on the Snooty Fox, Alioli Tapas Bar and Kal's Southern Hills Chophouse.

The owners of those eateries, in order, Louis Rios, Terry Turner and Kal Jaser, had given us some distinctive and memorable dining experiences. It's possible one or two of them will resurface one day with new restaurants. Here's hoping they do.

It's truly a shame that locally owned restaurants of this caliber have such a struggle. One usually thinks that if the food is good, the service is good and the atmosphere is good, people will come. These closings show that it just takes something more. . .
