50th anniversary edition of the GT350.

It's pretty amazing that one man's passion for cars has turned into an event that brings 30,000 people through Tulsa every year.

It started as an afternoon picnic that Jim Wicks put on a few years after he finally bought his dream car - a Shelby GT350. He'd always been a fan of Mustangs, and decided he wanted to meet up with some other people who loved them, too. Sixteen cars and 30 people showed up for that first picnic.

Now, 38 years later, the Mid America Ford and Team Shelby Nationals spans 5 days. It features a car show, open track events, a mustang cruise through the Brady district, and drag racing.

Wicks said as the event grew, he realized his love for these cars "wasn’t so strange after all."

Indeed it isn't. About 30,000 people and 1,200 cars are expected at this year's event. Last year, people attended from 34 states and 7 countries.

The 38th annual event is set for Wednesday, June 13, through Sunday, June 17. For a complete schedule of events, visit tulsaworld.com/shelbynationals.

See Sunday's Scene section for more about the event.
