Nicole's Big Boy tomatoes

Amanda Forman was the first reader to share photos of the tomatoes in her garden.

She has Cherokee purples and egg yolk plants. She bought both from Lisa Merrell, the tomato man's daughter. She also used Merrell’s compost.

“Everything is so healthy!” Forman reports.

Keep sending your tomato pics to Nicole.marshall@tulsaworld.com

(Here’s the previous post…)

OK, proud tomato growers, it’s time to share.

A bit of bravado about your tomato babies is warranted this year. Perhaps, it will wash away the memories of the disastrous growing season last summer.

We received some Big Boy tomato plants from a neighbor and promptly put them in our raised bed. Yes, please forgive me and all the other eager tomato growers. It was early. April or (gasp) March, we can’t remember.

Anyway, here they are - basking in the sun behind a protective mesh canopy. And I have heard some mouth-watering tales of other tomato triumphs. Yes, Cherokee Purple, you know I’m talking about you...

How are your tomatoes doing this year?

Send me some photos to nicole.marshall@tulsaworld.com and I will post them to this blog.

Happy tomato season!

My Big Boys aren't really feeling it, but my grape tomatoes are going nuts! I'll send some pics your way....assuming I remember to take some. :)

Food Writer Nicole Marshall Middleton joined the Tulsa World in May 1993 after graduating from Oklahoma State University. She has covered crime, city government and general assignment beats during that time - but mostly crime. But when she isn’t at work, Nicole is a devoted food hobbyist. She enjoys meal planning and cooking with her husband, Steve, every day of the week and on holidays it’s a family affair. When the opportunity to become the food writer at the Tulsa World presented itself in the summer of 2011, Nicole jumped at it. She is excited to explore a new side of Tulsa and make the transition from crime to cuisine. .
