Email, tweets, texts, voice messages and any other high-tech communication alternative must not be considered the same as a private conversation with a friend or even a complete stranger. There is no deniability. And, your mother was correct: Don’t put anything in writing (update that to cell phone or computer) that you don’t want everyone to know.
The list of transgressors is lengthy, too lengthy to mention here. We can’t, of course, forget Rep. Anthony Weiner (who could with a name like that associated with his, well, wiener problem).
Friday, Russell Crowe, the Oscar-winning actor who has had previous scuffles, literally, with others, got his Twitter working in the San Francisco circumcision brouhaha.
Briefly, pun intended, a faction in San Francisco wants to pass a city ordinance banning circumcision. Really. This idea, of course, has run into several problems, not the least of which is the fact that circumcision is a religious rite in the Jewish community. This issue is so goofy it could only be taken seriously in California.
Crowe attempted to nip in the bud, again, pun intended, through a 140-character tweet the defense of circumcision. He was tweeting a friend who had asked him his opinion on the procedure. He dismissed the idea that clipping the foreskin promotes male hygiene. He said a newborn baby is perfect on delivery.
Then, of course, the outrage began. He was forced to issue another tweet, apologizing for the previous tweet: "I realize that some will interpret this debate as me mocking the rituals and traditions of others. I am very sorry." In another post, he tweeted: "I have a deep and abiding love for all people of all nationalities ..."
Again, message to everyone who owns a cell phone or a computer: These are NOT private conversations. Say or do something stupid, especially if you are a celebrity or politician, and it’s going to end up on the Internet.
Go ahead, deny all you want. But the evidence belies your denial. If you want to make stupid comments, do it in a bar over a drink. If someone says you said something, deny. Just make sure your buddies at the bar don’t have there cell phones on record.
Hey, it’s a whole new world. I haven’t decided if it’s a better one. But I’m trying to keep my mouth shut, a least a little, in bars
