"The X Factor's" final 13 contestants plus a children's choir sang in tribute of the Sandy Hook victims last night on Fox. RAY MICKSHAW/Fox
"The X Factor" opened with a touching tribute to the victims of last Friday’s killings in Sandy Hook, Conn., last night.
A somber-faced Cowell, seated at the judges' desk and obviously affected by the introduction he was giving, addressed the audience in part one of the two-part season final of Fox's singing competition.
"Words cannot describe what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School last week," said Cowell.
"We're all deeply saddened by the tragedy, and our hearts right now go out to the families. You will always be in our prayers and you will always be in our hearts and this is our tribute to you."
Then the top 13 contestants including the finalists took the stage all dressed in white and sang Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone" as the names of the 26 victims appeared on screens. The singers were backed by a children's choir.
The tribute ended with the words "You are not alone. We are here with you" displayed in the center screen and followed by silence.
Finalists Carly Sonenclar, Tate Stevens and Fifth Harmony had their final performances last night. The winner will be announced tonight in the two-hour finale airing 7-9 p.m. on Fox, channel 23, cable 5.
