Shirley Jackson

Shirley Jackson is the latest author to be included in the Library of America series, with a single volume of "Novels and Stories" due out in June.

The book, edited by Joyce Carol Oates (the 2002 Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award winner), will include the collection "The Lottery, or The Adventures of James Harris," which contains Jackson's best-known story, some of her "domestic humor" sketches and her two best known novels: "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" and "The Haunting of Hill House."

Which begins, as you might remember, this way:
"No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone."
