The seventh Skiatook Bluegrass Festival will be June 2-4 at Skiatook Sports Complex Park in Skiatook.

It features headliner Special Consensus. Special C is a four person acoustic bluegrass band that began touring in the Midwest in the spring of 1975.

International tours have brought The Special Consensus to the United Kingdom, Canada, Europe, Ireland and South America. In 1993, the band performed the first of many concerts with a symphony orchestra, complete with orchestral arrangements of songs from the band repertoire.

The band is Rick Faris on mandolin, Greg Cahill on banjo, David Thomas on Bass and Ryan Roberts on guitar.

Other bands performing at the festival are Summertown Road, the Westbound Rangers, Hankerin' for Hank, Rockin' Acoustic Circus, Hayden & Osage Grass, The Horn Family, The Hunt Family, Backroads Bluegrass and the ZooGrass Boys.

Arts and crafts, food vendors, over 100 RV hookups, a large shaded seating area, tent camping, jamming through the day and night and a Junior Fiddle Contest on Saturday morning will make the festival an event for everyone.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
