Sky-high pies

German chocolate pie from the Hammett House.

This morning I made a trip to the Hammett House in Claremore for a story I'm working on about hot rolls.

I'll save the details on the rolls for the newspaper, but I have to tell you about what else I found while there.

PIE.

I've never seen such gorgeous pie. Homemade crust, painstakingly made each night by Patsy VanDeventer, an angel who makes all of the restaurant's pies and rolls while we sleep. Bill Biard, owner of the Hammett House, said the title of baker doesn't do her justice. Baking goddess is more like it.

Last year, the Hammett House was featured in Southern Living magazine for its home cooking and Patsy's pies in particular.

Patsy's pies change day to day, depending on the season, her mood and what she has on hand. Today's pies included banana cream, coconut cream, chocolate cream, German chocolate, lemon pecan, buttermilk chess, apple, sour cream raisin and chocolate chip-peanut butter.

These aren't frozen, from-the-box pies, they're honest-to-goodness homemade.

If you're a pie lover, it's a must-stop.

I don't love pies near as much as you, but that looks good.

Natalie, I've always wanted to go there. It's not on my to-do list, especially on Chess Pie day!

You can tell you aren't from Tulsa because pie at the Hammett House is a very old secret along with the mud baths at the hotel in Claremore

Hey, Elly Willy....at least I am not from Missippi and I can say that Osage County is my real home, "Gal".
