In researching a review on the new Philly's Cheesesteak Co. (scheduled in Thursday's Weekend section), I talked to Snook Bayouth about the history of the 100-year-old Bayouth Building in Collinsville, where Philly's is located.

Bayouth, grandson of Sol Bayouth, who bought the building in 1916, recalled the time a movie, "Eye of God," partially was filmed in the Bayouth Building in 1997.

"They turned part of the upstairs into a sheriff's office," Bayouth remembered. "Hal Holbrook played the sheriff. It was a lot of fun and a pretty big deal in Collinsville."

The film also starred Martha Plimpton, Mary Kay Place and Nick Stahl, and was directed by Tim Blake Nelson.

Bayouth said for much of the 1900s the upstairs held 20 apartment units, and at one time also had a dentist's office and a Masonic lodge.

"It's a great old building," Bayouth said. "It still has a rope elevator and a lot of original stuff. The front of the building has changed a lot over the years. It's been everything from marble to brick, stone and wood."
