Just in time for the holiday season, the geekosphere is exploding with new information on upcoming sci fi movies. Seriously, if you've made it this far without seeing the title, turn back now.
Star Trek Movie Synopsis Released

In what is probably some of the most exciting news for fans of the new Star Trek movies is the synopsis revealed yesterday afternoon by Paramount for the new movie coming to theaters next May.
Here is the synopsis from the Paramount Studio's website:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.”
This is very interesting, because it's known that Benedict Cumberbatch will be the villain. The geekosphere has been buzzing about the identity of the mystery villain, and no one has said a word.
Personal note: It seems very unlikely that the villain is Khan, since the synopsis doesn't really make sense in context with the Eugenic Wars storyline Khan is symbiotically tied to. I have no official word on the villain, but my geek-senses are flurried with excitement. (My unofficial, nerdtastic bets are on Gary Mitchell)
If you can't wait to get more for the new Star Trek Into Darkness movie, there will be an 11-minute preview with Peter Jackson's movie The Hobbit, which opens December 14. However the 11-minute preview will only be available in the IMAX showings of the movie.
Fan Trek news websites like TrekMovie are also reporting that the new trailer for Into Darkness will begin playing in theaters on December 14th as well. This seems to have been confirmed by a recent tweet by Into Darkness writer Damon Lindelof.
Star Trek Into Darkness stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Bruce Greenwood, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Peter Weller, Anton Yelchin and Alice Eve. The movie comes to theaters on May 17th, 2013.
Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen returning for Bryan Singer's Days of Future Past X-Men movie
Bryan Singer revealed on his twitter account that Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult are returning to reprise their roles for his newest X-Movie Days of Future Past.

This has the potential of being the best X-Men movie of all time, because the story is one of the best X-Plots of all time. First written by Chris Claremont, the story deals with Kitty Pride returning to her younger body to try to avert a massively apocalyptic future for human and mutantkind. It's also a genius way of using time travel. It was also expressed by the producers that the next two movies would take place one decade apart. This means the X-Men will be surrounded by disco and bell bottoms.
Famke Janssen has hinted to her return as Jean Grey, and of course Hugh Jackman will return because he's had more cameos in the X-Universe than Stan Lee. Literally. (On a side note, he is currently in talks to star in the new movie.) One person I would not expect to see in the new X-Movie is Halle Berry, because she made such massive demands in X3 (bigger role, more money, etc). It's possible that she will return, but with the scope and budget of the new movie, it seems unlikely. The actors who have played in previous movies have voiced their desire to return as well.
However, the crux of the original plot is Kitty Pride, played in X3 by Ellen Page. Even if Page returns as Kitty Pride, I have no idea how they're going to work around that, unless they literally send Kitty back to the 70s, instead of into her younger body, which in the movies timeline wouldn't exist in the 70s.
We'll see how they manage to pull it off. Even so, this is probably going to be a sci fi movie game-changer. (I'm still hoping for Sentinels.)
X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to arrive in theaters on July 18, 2014.
Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in new production video, on the beach filming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire movie.
More footage was released of the Hunger Games actors filming for the new Catching Fire movie.
I hope there will be a lot of stabby surfing involved.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is set to open November 22, 2013.
Bilbo Baggins gets Sting in the very first clip From The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The first true clip from the Hobbit movie was released this week. It's one of the big plot changes for Bilbo in the story, and it's fitting that this would be the first clip released to the public.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens December 14 in theaters and IMAX nation-wide.
