It's been a little while since I posted a roundup, but news has been a bit slow on the spoiler front for the holidays. However things are picking up and we're finding out a lot about some upcoming movies and shows!

'Star Trek' update

A lot of tiny bits of information have surfaced over the holidays in regard to "Star Trek." Apparently there are more than 1,400 effects shots in the film, as well as meticulous detail added to the makeup of the actors. The film is being shot in IMAX and 3-D, so we will see so much more detail in props and make up that could have been missed in the first movie.

We also found out we would not only see Klingons, but also some of their makeup and wardrobe would be an homage to the original series. Even their hair would be shorter to more closely match the original series' version, but the forehead ridges will be kept.

The new official summary via The Film Stage:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

J.J. Abrams recently sat down with TrekMovie and said that even though the name of the movie was "Into Darkness" that the movie would have a happy ending. Apparently in a new edit of the summary, Kirk actually loses his ship and has to find Benedict Cumberbatch's character with Spock and Uhura in Klingon space, eventually leading them to Quo'nos (the Klingon home planet).

As for Cumberbatch's character, it has been thoroughly stated by Abrams, the cast and crew of the studio that he is not Khan.

If you've read "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad, the thematic elements become a bit clearer in regard to the style, tone and plot.

'Jurassic Park IV' has a release date

Just when you thought those horrible dino-men were the last breath of the fourth installment, we find out that Universal has set a release date for the movie: June 13, 2014. Spielberg will be producing the film, but no director has been named yet. Writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver will be writing the script (after a long line of writers).

Hopefully there will be no sign of the dinosaur men.

'Hunger Games' news

Lionsgate has been releasing a steady stream of content for the upcoming "Catching Fire" movie. We've seen Jennifer Lawrence and company in surf outfits, as well as other behind-the-scenes images showing the stars from the first movie.

Of course, when you have a dystopian future where most people die by the end of the first movie, you would need a few new actors.

Returning to the movie will be Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci and Woody Harrelson. We'll also see the addition of Sam Claflin, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jena Malone, Jeffrey Wright and Amanda Plummer.

Without major spoilers, it would be safe to say the movie will follow the book in its logical progression of Katniss and Peeta touring the districts of Panem in victory, while the rumbles of a revolution begin to stir and the evil President Scowly McWhitebeard stages the 75th session of the Hunger Games.

Writer hired for Assassin's Creed movie

Ubisoft Motion Pictures has hired writer Michael Lessie to pen the first "Assassin's Creed" movie. If you've ever played the game, "Assassin's Creed" has a great premise and storyline, so creating a line of movies was the next logical step.

Michael Lessie is an English playwright known for "The Prince of Denmark." Michael Fassbender will be starring in the movie, as well as producing it.

"Assassin's Creed" is the story of a man named Desmond who uses technology called the Animus to experience the past lives of his ancestors, who were assassins. With this he fights the Abstergo corporation, a modern-day cloak for the Knights Templar.

The movie's release date is TBA.

Disney announces new release dates, cans the fish princess

2014 will be a huge year for Disney.

"Muppets 2" is slated for March 21, 2014, "Captain America: Winter Soldier" is releasing on April 4, 2014, and "Guardians of the Galaxy" will beam in on Aug. 1, 2014.

It will also be a good year for marvel, assuming "Guardians of the Galaxy" does well at the box office. Even so, I predict the Captain America movie will do well regardless.

"The Little Mermaid" slated for re-release in 3-D on Sept. 13 will not be happening. I guess she won't be part of the 3-D world. You know that song just played in your head.

You're welcome.

"Pirates of the Caribbean 5" will release on July 10, 2015, in hopes that it will join other summer movies in blockbuster status. Anyone care to guess on where they will be going next?

2014 will be a huge year for movies

This year will be huge for movies, but 2014 seems to be packed with so many big names in lights that we should start saving money now. In addition to the movies mentioned above, "Transformers 4" will release on June 27, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" will swing in on May 2, "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" will BOTH premier in theaters on July 18, "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will release on Nov. 21, and "Avatar 2" is slated for sometime in December.

I know, my wallet is crying out in agony already.
