The first poster is out for the upcoming “Star Trek Into Darkness,” and you can see some of the destruction mentioned in the synopsis fellow Prairie Nerd Michael Dambold shared last week.

The poster shows Benedict Cumberbatch in a black coat from behind, the Star Trek insignia torn into a building crumbling around him, a lot like the Batman logo from some of the posters for “The Dark Knight Rises.” Cumberbatch, who was recently in Oklahoma shooting “August: Osage County,” plays the as-yet unnamed villain in the movie.

Much early speculation about Cumberbatch’s character pointed toward him portraying Khan Noonien Sing, the classic villain from the original series and later "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," but Simon Pegg, who portrays Scotty in the most recent Trek films, said that wasn’t the case.

So, who do you think Cumberbatch’s villain is? I’m going with this theory I saw this morning: Cumberbatch will play Lt. Cmdr. Gary Mitchell from the second pilot of the original Star Trek series.

“Star Trek Into Darkness” is set to open in theaters May 17, 2013.
