"Star Trek Into Darkness" to hit IMAX two days early

"Star Trek Into Darkness"

If you want to be the first of your friends to know the secrets behind "Star Trek Into Darkness," you're going to have to see it in IMAX.

The sequel to the 2009 preboot will debut with 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 showings at the IMAX theaters at Cinemark Tulsa and AMC Southroads 20, ahead of the May 17 opening of the movie everywhere.

Both local theaters now have tickets on sale online for the giant-screen experience.

The film, directed again by J.J. Abrams (now the director of the next "Star Wars" film), is in 3-D and like the last two "Dark Knight" films and last "Mission: Impossible" movie, it has scenes that were filmed with the IMAX cameras to give the full wow-effect impact.

Tom Cruise's "Ghost Protocol" was the first movie to open in IMAX a week early in December 2011, and now his science-fiction flick "Oblivion" is preparing to do the same in April.

We can expect to see more of these early IMAX debuts coming as more potential blockbusters will look to have that IMAX "event movie" tag associated with their titles.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
