Image: starwars.com Every few years, usually to coincide with some sort of major release, Lucasfilm sponsors a gigantic Star Wars convention. There have been six so far held in America, and at the latest one last summer fans were treated to a live, unrehearsed performance of Smuggler's Gambit, an all-new Han Solo adventure directed by Kyle Newman of Fanboys fame.
Performed in the spirit of the original radio dramas, produced by NPR back in the day, the audio has been cleaned up and mixed, and is now available for streaming or download at starwars.com.
The NPR radio dramas were first produced in 1981 starting with Star Wars, with The Empire Strikes Back following in 1983. Both were big parts of my own childhood, and I listened to the cassette tapes over and over again for years. Return of the Jedi wasn't made until 1996, but most of the same team were brought back and it was just as good. The dramas expand a lot on the plot, adding scenes only hinted at in the movies themselves. This new drama, though a little rough around the edges, due to it being performed live and in front of an audience, is still an extremely fun way to spend a half an hour.
