Streisand + "Downton Abbey" creator = "Gypsy" = Oscar?

Barbra Streisand is coming to a theater near you.

It appears that Barbra Streisand is going to make at least one last stab at winning another Academy Award.

Sure, she could have other opportunities, but Babs does turn 70 in April.

Universal Pictures announced in a press release Tuesday that the studio plans to mount a film production of Arthur Laurents' stage musical "Gypsy," with Streisand in the role of Mama Rose that has won acclaim for Rosalind Russell and Bette Midler in the past.

The idea is to team Streisand up with writer Julian Fellowes, who would adapt the musical based on the life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee.

Fellowes is the Emmy Award-winning creator of the beloved "Downton Abbey" series from BBC, and he has an Oscar as well for best screenplay for "Gosford Park."

No word yet on who might play Gypsy -- or who would direct this picture.

Streisand has not directed a musical since "Yentl" in 1983, and she has not directed any movie since 1996's "The Mirror Has Two Faces."

The role won Golden Globes for both Russell and Midler, the former in a theatrical film and the latter for a TV movie.

As for Streisand, she is a two-time Oscar winner: best actress for "Funny Girl" in 1968, and for best song in 1976, with "Evergreen" from "A Star is Born."

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
