Summer Under the Stars

Turner Classic Movies (digital channel 210 on Cox Cable in Tulsa) started its annual “Summer Under the Stars” promotion this past week, devoting a full slate each day in August to films from one Hollywood star.
See the full schedule of films at tulsaworld.com/tcmstars.
We all have our favorite performers, with favorite films we’ve seen again and again. But almost every day brings a star and a film that I’ve never seen and have always hoped to see. Here’s the lineup of stars for the rest of the month:
Aug. 4: James Coburn
Aug. 5: Harold Lloyd
Aug. 6: Judy Garland
Aug. 7: Glenn Ford
Aug. 8: Bette Davis
Aug. 9: Cary Grant
Aug. 10: Dirk Bogarde
Aug. 11: Audrey Hepburn
Aug. 12: Clark Gable
Aug. 13: Gloria Grahame
Aug. 14: Sidney Poitier
Aug. 15: Deborah Kerr
Aug. 16: Elvis Presley
Aug: 17: Jennifer Jones
Aug. 18: John Wayne
Aug. 19: Red Skelton
Aug. 20: Miriam Hopkins
Aug. 21: Gene Hackman
Aug. 22: Sterling Hayden
Aug. 23: Angela Lansbury
Aug. 24: Fredric March
Aug. 25: Merle Oberon
Aug. 26: Yul Brynner
Aug. 27: Ida Lupino
Aug. 28: Frank Sinatra
Aug. 29: Peter Sellers
Aug. 30: Jean Arthur
Aug. 31: Claire Bloom
Hey, nobody has seen everything from the last 75 years. For example, if time allowed I would attempt to catch for the first time:
Friday, Aug. 7: Glenn Ford in “3:10 to Yuma” from 1957, to compare to the recent Russell Crowe remake.
Tuesday, Aug. 11, Audrey Hepburn in “The Children’s Hour,” the Lillian Hellman play turned into a movie with James Garner.
Aug. 16, Elvis Presley in “Jailhouse Rock,” for a frame of reference other than the black-and-white video always shown accompanying the song.
Aug. 17, Jennifer Jones in “Beat the Devil,” just to see Tulsa’s Oscar-winning actress opposite Humphrey Bogart.
Aug. 22, Sterling Hayden in “Manhandled” from 1949, a film noir that makes its premiere on TCM this day.
Aug. 23, Angela Lansbury in “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” so people will stop acting surprised that I’ve never seen this 1971 Disney tale.
Aug. 28, Frank Sinatra in “Some Came Running,” a Sinatra/Dean Martin/Shirley MacLaine flick I’ve meant to watch so many times.
Each star has about a dozen of their best movies showing each day. If you check the lineup and determine that you’ve seen each film listed from any of these actors, let me know on my blog. You’ll impress me and everyone else.

I See Movies for Free
“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in
movie critic Michael Smith’s
brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
