Last night was full of surprises on "American Idol."

It wasn’t just that 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez did not win Fox's reality TV singing competition after weeks of adoration by the judges.

But that former contestant Ace Young was invited on stage with his girlfriend Diana DeGarmo, also a former "Idol" contestant, and ended up proposing to her.

"This has always been home to us and I felt that this would be the perfect place to ask a simple question," Young, 31, said as he got down on one knee.

"I love you to death, you're my best friend, I wanna make this last forever," he said before asking her to marry him.”

DiGarmo, 24, was nearly speechless but managed to say "yes."

"Wow, babe you picked a good one," DeGarmo said, looking at her engagement ring. "My makeup’s running!"

Young finished seventh in season five of "Idol" while DeGarmo was runnerup in season three of the Fox series. The couple reportedly met while co-starring in the Broadway production of "Hair" in 2010.

DeGarmo is also signed to Young Brothers Entertainment, an indie record label run by Young and brother Ryan and she and Young co-wrote her new country ballad, "Good Goodbye," for the Angelina character she plays on the CBS soap opera "The Young & The Restless," according to music.yahoo.com.

Both singers have released new music recently.

Rita Sherrow grew up with TV. Yes, it was the ever-present “sister” from another techno mother. At first look, it was instant "Like." From then on, the TV had to be on in every room while she studied, elementary school through college. An Air Force brat, she attended school in three states (Oklahoma, Montana and Georgia) and two foreign countries (Germany and Bermuda) and graduated from Broken Arrow High School and the University of Tulsa with a degree in journalism/advertising. She first interned in the advertising world but, when a J-School professor (who also covered politics for the Tulsa World) offered her an internship at the newspaper, she took him up on it. The rest is history. She has served as bridal editor, senior features writer for the women’s section, food editor and is television editor of the Tulsa World. In addition to writing about TV shows and interviewing the stars for “Scene” stories, she also writes a TV column for Weekend and produces the Sunday TV World listings magazine.
