AUSTIN, Texas -- Oklahoma City psychedelic rocker Stardeath and White Dwarfs performed Friday at the South by Southwest music festival at Austin Music Hall.

To be honest, I remember seeing these guys open for the Flaming Lips in late 2006 at the Oklahoma City Zoo Amphitheater. The band has improved 10-fold since then, lead singer Dennis Coyne honing his talent on guitar, keyboards, theremin, and most importantly vocals for the strongest set I've seen from this band.

Coyne's poppy lyrics coaxed listeners into the ozone, while inchoate guitar riffs and basslines mixed with John Bohnam-esque big drums reminded me of the 90's-era band that his uncle Wayne Coyne founded, the Flaming Lips. Stardeath embraces this influence, heck, it's practically inescapable. The physical ticks with Dennis Coynes arms while playing guitar, his wild hair, slender frame, eccentric wardrobe, warbly vocals ... There are also tinges of influences including Jane's Addiction (namely Perry Farrell), Black Sabbath, Rush and the Flaming Lips, to name a few.
