Billy Joe Shaver

I'll see you out, I'm sure of it.

Tonight:
THE OTHERSIDE
69th Street and Lewis Avenue
6 p.m. Friday
Cover: $22 in advance, $26 at door. Available at www.tulsaworld.com/okctickets, all ages

Music: Switchfoot, Stars Go Dim, My Solstice, Athlete
On Friday, multi-platinum touring rocker Switchfoot will headline this show, with multi-platinum English rocker Athlete opening. This is an important show for many reasons, including the live debut of up-and-coming, positive poprocker Stars Go Dim and a special appearance by Spot Music Award-nominated rock act My Solstice.

All shows on Switchfoot’s tour benefit the nonprofit To Write Love on Her Arms, which helps those struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide – and provides hope and help for treatment and recovery. Look for a special presentation by TWLOHA founder Jamie Tworkowski before the band’s set.

Tomorrow:
MERCURY LOUNGE
18th Street and Boston Ave.
10 p.m. Saturday
Cover: $25

Music: Billy Joe Shaver
After he mangled several fingers in a lumber mill accident, this future outlaw country maven got his start when he hooked his thumb out along roadsides in a hoped-for lift out of his home state of Texas and into California. Instead, he ended up in Nashville, where his songwriting caught the attention of Waylon Jennings.

Artists such as Elvis Presley, Kris Kristofferson, Patty Loveless and Willie Nelson also recorded his tunes. Johnny Cash said Shaver was “... My favorite songwriter.” In fact, Shaver’s often regarded as a living legend by fellow musicians – and rare live shows outside of his home state are very special events indeed.

Sunday:

in Bob’s side venue
423 N. Main St.
Doors open 8 p.m. Sunday, show at 8:45 p.m.

Music: Split Lip Rayfield, with The Skillbillies
For more than a decade, Wichitabased psychobilly/bluegrass rabble rouser Split Lip Rayfield has earned its hard-driving, free-wheeling reputation – one fun-filled show at a time.

“We’ve never been called boring,” laughed banjo player Eric Mardis in a recent telephone interview. On Sunday, the band will debut its post-Kirk Rundstrom three-piece for Tulsa at Cain’s Ballroom, as well as new songs for a “more aggressive” sounding new album expected out later this year. Hear it here first! (Read an interview with Mardis HERE.)

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
