Take a look: A peek at "The Hobbit"

Ian Holm (pictured) played Bilbo Baggins in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. English actor Martin Freeman will portray the character as a younger man in "The Hobbit."

"Lord of the Rings" fans were given an early Christmas treat when Warner Bros. released its first trailer for "The Hobbit" on Tuesday night.

For a movie that is a year from being released -- Dec. 14, 2012 -- I'm surprised that the 2 minute, 33 second trailer shows so much detail as to the story of Bilbo Baggins, in this prequel to the stories told in the "Lord of the Rings" movies.

What doesn't surprise me is that it looks fantastic. And why shouldn't it?

Director Peter Jackson returns, as does the team from the first three marvelous films. Jackson's Weta Digital is creating special effects for movies like "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "The Adventures of Tintin" that are advancing the technology.

I'm pretty excited about this trailer and pleased that it offers such detail, without spoiling any element of the storytelling. Now to wait for an entire year, sigh.....

I have "The Lord of The Rings" Trilogy and I will definitely want to see "The Hobbit". I am impressed just watching the trailer.

The person singing the background song, sounds like Leonard Cohen. He has been doing a lot of the songs in a number of TV episodes. He sang several on Criminal Minds.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
