Take a look: "Puss in Boots" opens Friday

He is skilled with a sword. He has a roguish charm and quite a reputation with the ladies. He laps up milk from a bowl.

He is "Puss in Boots," the French fairy-tale character that Antonio Banderas several years ago turned into more of a Zorro-like character in the "Shrek" universe.

If it hadn't been for the super-huge $52 million opening weekend of "Paranormal Activity 3," this might have been considered the big opener to the fall movie season. It will still be huge, with better than $40 million expected this weekend.

This new movie is both a spinoff and a prequel to his having ever met his ogre and donkey pals, and it's the kitty's turn in the spotlight — which, if moved about in a random fashion, the cat is sure to chase around.

Feline in-jokes are sprinkled about like catnip for kids and adults alike who will find “Puss in Boots” lighter in rapid-fire jokes than the "Shrek" series (but still amusing) and amped up in action-adventure thrills.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
