Take a look: "Scream 4"

When people talk to me about new movies, horror is among the least likely genres to discuss. But the "Scream" movies are different. People have been asking me about "Scream 4," the first in the series in 11 years.

The first "Scream" came out in 1996, and it was different from any slasher-style film we'd seen in a while, especially those so prolific in the 1980s. It was a very good film, for starters, with imagery that's hard to forget, and I don't just mean that Ghostface Killer mask.

"Scream" was scary. It was funny. Its deconstruction of horror movies, killers and victims was clever. It featured stars you knew rather than teenage no-names. The second and third "Scream" movies didn't match the first, but they weren't bad movies.

"Scream 4," also directed by "Scream" creator Wes Craven ("A Nightmare on Elm Street") brings back Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette from the original cast. Newcomers include Emma Roberts, Kristen Bell, Hayden Panettierre and Anna Paquin; this is another impressive cast of co-stars, all of whom probably grew up as fans of the first three films.

Maybe the MVP, who also returns: Roger Jackson as the voice on the phone. You know the voice as well as you know the mask.

"Scream 4" opens April 15 in Tulsa theaters. The first three films were just released on blu-ray DVD for the first time with audio commentaries, deleted scenes and alternate endings.

Check out the new trailer for "Scream 4." What do you think?

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
