Jennifer Lawrence ("Winter's Bone," "X-Men: First Class") plays Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of "The Hunger Games."

If you haven't read "The Hunger Games," the young-adult science-fiction series by Suzanne Collins, and you are wondering what all the hubbub is about, take a look at the trailer for this hotly anticipated film here.

I'm going to refer to this as the first "real" trailer for the March 23, 2012, release because the one that debuted two months ago gave no indication of what the film is about and almost no idea of the look of the film.

All it offered were 66 seconds of intercut, close-up shots of a chase through a jungle and Jennifer Lawrence, last year's Oscar nominee for "Winter's Bone," who won out over many of Hollywood's hottest young actresses for the chance to play the young "Hunger Games" heroine, Katniss Everdeen.

The good news is that this trailer gives an excellent overview of the postapocalyptic atmosphere and the televised ritual that is "The Hunger Games," in which 24 competitors enter, but only one survives.

Take a look and see if you think that "The Hunger Games" has a chance at replacing your epic-movie longings now that the "Harry Potter" movies are done and the "Twilight" series is nearing its cinematic end.
